06.22.2015 Letter of Mental Health to CSN and Masters Program ...
June 22, 2015
Dear Ms. Washington,
My name is Kimberly and I am a transferring student from UNLV. I graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications with an emphasis on Marketing and Journalism. Since then, I've worked as a journalist, marketing director , press secretary, public manager and senior copywriter.
After many years of "white-knuckling" it through mental illness and addiction, I was fired from my copywriting job in 2007. I went through multiple moves (from Las Vegas to Salt Lake, Seattle and back again). During this wanderlust, I married a man I met in rehab; disappeared inside a bottle of pills and mental illness; and survived physical/psychological abuse at his hands. Eventually, I had to bury him when he overdosed and died on July 14, 2012.
That same year, I came back to Las Vegas, where I have my family and friends. I also came to the conclusion that my "mind over matter" approach to addiction and my 20-year-old bipolar diagnosis was no longer working for me. In the past two years, I've worked hard at getting better. I finally committed to dealing with my dual diagnosis by taking a time-out in life and spending the last 8 months in mental facilities and treatment centers. I started out at Rawson Neal Mental Hospital, moved on to Solutions inpatient treatment program, Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOP) at CCCC, as well as a active participation in a 12-step program. Currently, I am living in a sober house near the Charleston campus. I have graduated IOP, still have therapy once a week, and consistently attend AA/NA meetings.
This brings me up to now. I haven't held a job for 8 years. Before my mental collapse, I was working successfully in my field. I feel with the foundation and tools that I have been working so diligently on, I am extremely motivated to dive into the next phase of my career. To do this, however, I need to augment my education. I have always been on the edge of technology - that is until these last 8 years. I intend to use my Associate's Degree in Women's Studies as an important segue-way and career niche. It's a burgeoning field in which I can make a difference. I need to update my education, so that I can not only make a decent living, but also be a decent human being and give back to society. I am stronger now than I have ever been. Once again, I have confidence and pride in myself. I implore you to invest in me today with financial aid. There is so much that I intend to do and I need your green light to begin.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Coon

Anatomy of a Relapse ...
March 23, 2015 - 10:45pm
- Las Vegas, Nevada
Plopped down inside a jumble of mismatched, multi-colored recyclable bags, I start to write. The bus lurches to and fro - vaguely smelling like fermented wine and skunkweed. Dried tears streak my dirty cheeks
Newsflash! This girl actually feels emotion. Humiliation clings to me. Well-earned, but mine nonetheless.
Karen and brother Carpenter tell me that "He has a ticket to ride ... and he don't care." An exquisitely timed tune and message to be sure. I think to myself, "What a stupid sentence I just wrote." And since it's handwritten, I decide to keep it.
We are heading south on Jones towards Tropicana. We just passed through Desert Inn. Red hot shame colors my trip. Angry with sweat, Pearl Jam mirrors my emotional state. "Why? Oh why?!" lead singer, Eddie Vedder laments.
Seriously Kimberly - Why? Oh why, Coonie?!
Why do I sabotage myself with nonsense? Unimportant shenanigans. "Why? Oh why?!" I lament.
"Girls just want to have fun!" used to be my motto. Now there's nothing fun about this mandatory eviction. -- Kimberly Coon
